Democrat Pramila Jayapal just became the first Indian-American elected to Congress, having won Washington state's 7th district, according to the Associated Press.
The Democrats hopes of winning the Senate seem to have been dashed, as they've only picked up one seat so far, Tammy Duckworth over Mark Kirk in Illinois. Four Senate races are still to be decided, but Republican candidates are leading in all of them.
Catherine Cortez Masto has won the Nevada Senate seat vacated by Senator Harry Reid. The Democrat will be the first Latina senator. Hispanics make up more than a quarter of the state’s population – and account for 328,000 eligible voters. In its biggest city, Las Vegas, casino and restaurant workers have rallied around Democrats. The state awarded its six electoral votes to Democratic candidate Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. The state’s population has tripled since 1980, accounting for some of the volatility.
