Associated Press calls Iowa for Donald Trump (6 electoral votes)
It has been an eerily quiet night inside the White House, VOA’s White House correspondent Cindy Saine reports. There’s been no word from President Barack Obama tonight, who almost certainly is watching the returns in the family's quarters – and likely is shocked by the nail-bitingly close contest between Trump and Clinton.
Obama has poured his heart and soul into working to help Clinton get elected, spending much of the past three weeks traveling to key battleground states to hold rallies for her and get out the vote. Speaking to a record crowd Monday night in Philadelphia, Obama asked the American people to do one more thing for him and to work as hard as they can on Election Day for Clinton. He said he was betting on the American people.
The president has said that if Trump is elected, all the things Democrats have accomplished over the past eight years, including expanding health care access to millions of Americans, could be undone. If Trump wins the presidency, Obama will see it as a serious blow to his legacy.
Outside the White House, crowds are beginning to gather, including some supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Trump wins Utah (6 electoral votes).
Florida voters have overwhelmingly voted yes on a state constitutional amendment approving the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes, 71 to 29 percent. Two years ago, a similar vote fell just short of approval.
Montana and North Dakota have similar proposals on the ballot.
Voters in Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada are voting on legalizing recreational use of marijuana.
