2 Kenyan Police Killed in Al-Shabab Attack

Somali militant group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for an attack in northeastern Kenya that killed at least two police officers Sunday.

A statement on a pro-Shabab website said fighters from the group ambushed a Kenyan military convoy as it left the town of El Wak, bound for Mandera. El Wak is a divided city on the Kenya-Somalia border.

The Kenyan Red Cross said two police officers were killed and two others injured in the attack. Al-Shabab said three officers were killed.

The Islamist militant group has carried numerous attacks in Kenya since Kenyan troops entered Somalia to fight al-Shabab in October 2011.

In the deadliest attack, gunmen killed 148 people at Garissa University College in central Kenya last April.
