Israel came to a standstill Monday morning as the nation took time to remember the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust during World War II.

Sirens sounded for two minutes across the nation, stopping traffic and pedestrians. Many people stepped out of their vehicles and stood in silence. Pedestrians stopped walking and stood still in contemplation.

Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Day is one of the most solemn days of the Israeli calendar.

Ceremonies are held around the country.

The names of those who perished in the Holocaust will be read out at parliament.
