Former Israeli President Shimon Peres in Stable Condition After Stroke

Former Israeli President Shimon Peres suffered a stroke, Sept. 13, 2016, and was rushed to a hospital, where he was sedated and placed on a respirator ahead of a brain scan.

Former Israeli President and Prime Minister Shimon Peres is in serious but stable condition after suffering a severe stroke Tuesday.

Doctors say his condition was likely caused by hypertension.

The 93-year-old Peres was hospitalized in January for heart problems.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted a Facebook message saying the entire country loves Peres and wishes him a speedy recovery.

Peres has served Israel in nearly every major public office, including prime minister, president and foreign minister. He was a joint winner of the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize (with Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin) for helping to negotiate the Oslo peace accords with the Palestinians.
